Being one of important cultural facilities in most cities, museum and art gallery provide a great option for citizens to spend their leisure time. While some say these facilities should exhibit more local content instead of foreign cultures, I am not quite with this idea.

It should be admitted that museum and art gallery’s exhibition of domestic traditions bears great significance. Museum usually is the place where local historical relics are displayed. Therefore, for natives, it helps them to memorize the history, and avoid the past mistakes; for foreigners, it is also an ideal place to get to know more about the country. Similarly, both domestic habitants and overseas visitors could appreciate the country’s magnificent art only if the art galleries display a great deal of local works. This is why most city governments allocate some of their limited fundings on the maintenance of museums and galleries.

However, all mentioned above does not necessarily mean that nonnative exhibitions are useless. On the contrary, such an activity means a lot to local residents. The cost of traveling abroad is such a great burden for many people that they would never have the chance to go oversea during their lifetime. Even for those who are able to travel across the border, it is impossible for them to visit every corner of the world. Under this circumstance, the presentation of collection from another country seems much meaningful, as it provides the citizens with a cheap and easy access to the outside world, thus broadening their horizons.

Actually, from my point of view, these two purposes could be achieved simultaneously. Most museums and galleries divide their space into two parts, the larger one for local permanent exhibition and the smaller one for foreign contemporary exhibition. Therefore, these facilities could display exhibits from both internal and external areas at the same time.

In conclusion, both kinds of exhibition mean a lot, and they can be presented orderly with sufficient organization. Hence, I do not believe museums and galleries should only concentrate on local contents.
