What we are discussing is the topic about whether secondary school students and high school students should be permitted to choose their own courses freely, arguments are varied thanks to the apparent differences that exist in values. I, in the discussion, tend to claim that students can choose their own courses according to their own interest. My tendency derives from a close examination over the perspective of personal comprehensive growth and positive outcomes for society.

First and foremost, from the perspective of personal comprehensive growth, studying academic courses provides opportunities for students to gain more academic knowledge and improve their life prospects. Students in schools could positively access sufficient and adequate useful knowledge, such as language learning and calculation, which is beneficial for their own development in the future. Some students are not interested in academic courses or their grades are not ideal, so they can choose other courses that they are interested in, such as carpentry, electrician, etc. Thus, the learning performance in these aspects may be better.

Moreover, choosing courses according to their own interest may produce positive outcomes for society as a whole. As is known to all, not everyone can engage in academic work, and the development of society needs people in different fields. Students can also meet the needs of society by choosing their favorite fields independently. For example, students with poor academic performance do not need everyone to take the same academic examination. If they learn carpentry and electrician well, they can also find an unsettled job in the future.

However, the school should still force students to learn some general academic courses, such as language, mathematics, laws and regulations, and students are supposed to grasp some basic social skills, which is needed for their future life and basic work.

In conclusion, considering the performance of different students in different fields, it is better for students to choose the type of courses they want to study independently.
